What Does Documentary and Editorial Mean?

If you’ve browsed through my website or chatted with me on the phone, you’ve probably heard me describe my editing style as rich, authentic, and timeless, and my shooting style as a blend of editorial and documentary. But what does this mean for you and your photoshoot? Let’s dive in together so we can make sure my style is the perfect fit for your lasting memories!

At the heart of it, I love to have fun — it’s that simple! I want you to enjoy every moment of your photoshoot, whether you’re with your one true love, your bridal party, family, or even by yourself. My mission is to make sure you feel relaxed, happy, and have THE BEST time in front of the camera. I achieve this by blending documentary-style shots with some prompted poses and editorial more traditional poses to piece together the perfect gallery. I choose this approach because I believe these are the photos that best reflect your present, your story, and your legacy.

Often, it’s just one fleeting second that can perfectly convey love, pride, joy, or emotion — and that’s the moment I’m there for. Whether it’s a smile exchanged between you and a loved one, the excitement in a laugh, or the quiet tenderness of a shared glance, these are the authentic moments that tell the true story of your day. I’m there to catch them as they happen, preserving those genuine emotions that will transcend your life and be passed down to future generations.

That said, I also understand the value of a few more editorial poses — those perfect shots for grandma’s fridge, your Facebook profile, photo books, wall art, or holiday cards. So, throughout the shoot, I’ll guide you with a few more posed moments, like asking you to smile at the camera or look off into the distance for a classic, polished shot.

The type of session you choose (wedding, lifestyle, branding, couple, senior, etc.) will influence the balance between documentary and posed shots. For example, if you’re booking a branding photoshoot, your gallery will likely lean more editorial or posed than, say, a couples or in-home newborn shoot, which will have more of a documentary feel.

Weddings are the perfect blend of documentary and editorial. I’ll step in to prompt and pose during family portraits, couple shots, bridal party pictures, and bride-groom portraits. But during moments like getting ready, cocktail hour, speeches, and dancing, I prefer to step back and be a fly on the wall. This mix of editorial and documentary photography helps tell the best story of your wedding day, capturing both the big moments and the smaller, meaningful details.

For branding photoshoots, the focus is more on editorial or posed shots, with some documentary-style moments in between to showcase your true personality.

Lifestyle, maternity, and couple photoshoots typically have more of a documentary feel, with some posed moments sprinkled throughout for variety and balance.

I will never take for granted the privilege of being invited into your life to witness and document your most meaningful moments — from love and joy to achievements and milestones. It’s truly an honor to be the one who captures these memories, both the big moments and the quiet, subtle ones that often hold the most meaning. My heart is full knowing I get to tell your story through my lens, and I hope to serve you by preserving these moments for years to come, so you can relive the emotions, the laughter, and the beauty of your journey.
